Speedboard founder Bob Blair has made a career as a master mariner and ship pilot in New England. He also has a virtual lifetime of competitive paddling experience, making him uniquely qualified to assess the hydrodynamic performance of a stand up paddle board (SUP) design. Bob is fanatically passionate about finding marine craft that reward the efficient paddler and when he began surveying the current market selection of SUP boards, he saw an opportunity. As the idea for Speedboard began to formulate for Bob, the need for a lightweight board design that would simultaneously provide the requisite rigidity, while maintaining critical flexion, became paramount. That’s when Bob approached an old friend whom he had worked with in the past, Doug Zurn.
Doug Zurn founded Zurn Yacht Design in the early 1990s and has since launched over 150 distinctive power and sailing yachts. He is a graduate of the Westlawn Institute for small craft design he is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), and the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA).
In 2011 Speedboard approached Doug about forming an exclusive partnership with Speedboard USA and thankfully, he accepted. Doug brings his outstanding talent and experience from the yacht world, along with his state-of-the-art digital modeling resources, providing Speedboard with a tremendous competitive advantage. Through this alliance, Doug will lead the board design team at Speedboard and provide invaluable guidance to the production team, thereby ensuring each Speedboard meets his exacting standards for quality and consistency.
